Italy defeats Netherlands to claim Gold

The U18 European Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic ended on Sunday with Italy defending its title. The Squadra Azzurri defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in the Gold Medal Game. It was the seventh win in as many games in the tournament for Italy and the first defeat for the Dutch team. The Czech Republic claimed third place ahead of France.

I had a great opportunity to meet a celebrity today - there is a billboard here in Arrows stadium, inviting for junior European championship and on it, you can see Sapnish outfielder Daniel Martinez, taking a cut during last year´s senior European championship. And by coinsidence, he is a Spanish team leader here. So I asked him couple questions.

Vladimir: Daniel, how did you end up on a billboard in the Czech Republic?

Daniel: I was very surprised, when I came to a technical meeting last Sunday, I noticed a Spanish uniform and after a heated discussion with other coaches, we came to a conclusion that it is really me :D So I took a picture of it a sent to to all my friends and family. The only problem is that you can is the ball there too,

At the U18 European Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic the Netherlands and Italy have reached the Gold Medal Game  (7pm). Host Czech Republic and France need to settle for the game for third place (3pm). The Dutch team had edged out France, while the Czech lost the finals rematch from 2013 to Italy. Germany defeated Russia to claim fifth place in the final standings. Spain and Sweden prevailed in the consolation round on Saturday.

The first round at the U18 European Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic ended on Friday. The Czech Republic and France joined the Netherlands and Italy in the semi-finals on Saturday. Additionally Germany and Russia will play for fifth place. The remaining teams are set for the consolation round, which continues through Sunday.

With the conclusion of Day 5 of the tournament, pool play draws to a close and we see Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, and France advance to the semi-finals, which begin tomorrow.

Struggling through 35-degree heat, I did a good job of staying in the shade and enjoying iced coffees from the Arrows Restaurant, a very welcomed new addition to the menu.

For today's interview, I chatted with Vladimir Chlup, head scout for the Seattle Marines in the Czech Republic and head coach of Arrows Ostrava. (Hey, that's my team!)
